SpaceX (SPCX) stock just got an unusual new catalyst that has little to do with a rocket launch, a Starlink milestone, or a fresh AI breakthrough.

As highlighted in a recent CNBC segment, starting Monday, Sept. 21, SpaceX will account for a much higher weight in the Nasdaq-100, more than double the weighting it held after joining the index in July.

That technical adjustment is key, as the funds tracking the benchmark must now own considerably more SpaceX stock.

The shift follows a dramatic expansion in the number of shares available for public trading, offering index providers greater room to assign SpaceX a weight closer to its massive market value.

SpaceX stock has gained 15.5% from its initial $135 IPO price, though it sits 5.1% below its first-day closing price of $160.95, according to Yahoo Finance data. 

That said, the development could unlock another wave of demand from QQQ and more than 200 other investment products linked to the Nasdaq-100, while flashing a major near-term signal for investors after a volatile post-IPO stretch.

SpaceX’s Nasdaq weight more than doubled 

SpaceX has become a substantially bigger force in the Nasdaq-100, barely three months after its historic public debut.

The company entered the benchmark on July 7, as reported by CNBC, less than a month after its June 12 IPO. Nasdaq’s fast-entry rules allowed the newly public giant to avoid the longer waiting period associated with other major indexes. 

At the time, J.P. Morgan also estimated that its initial inclusion could generate up to $4.3 billion in purchases of Nasdaq-100 trackers, according to Reuters.

Yet SpaceX initially received just a 1.28% weighting, selling 639 million shares through its IPO and underwriters’ overallotment option, representing 5% of its 12.9 billion outstanding shares.

That unusually small public float limited the stock’s initial Nasdaq-100 weighting, despite the company’s massive market capitalization of roughly $2 trillion.

The first lockup expiration later made another 911.5 million insider shares eligible for sale, which lifted the potentially tradable pool to roughly 1.55 billion shares. 

Even so, Bloomberg now puts SpaceX’s investable share count at approximately 1.8 billion following subsequent unlocks. Against that backdrop, its Nasdaq-100 weighting has risen from 1.28% to 2.82%, an increase of 1.54 percentage points, or roughly 120%.

It essentially means that substantially more of the company is now available for index funds to own.

For every $100 billion tracking the Nasdaq-100, the higher weighting effectively creates about $1.54 billion in additional SpaceX exposure, equivalent to nearly 9.9 million shares at $156 apiece.

With QQQ and more than 200 other products linked to the index, the reset could unleash meaningful demand.

Wall Street agrees on upside, not SpaceX’s value 

Wall Street remains broadly bullish on SpaceX, but the spread between forecasts underscores how little agreement exists over what investors are actually buying.

For perspective, TipRanks places the average 12-month target at $232.07, with a Moderate Buy consensus, implying about 49% upside from a roughly $156 share price.

That average conceals an extraordinary valuation gap. Raymond James sits at the bullish extreme with an $800 target, while Morgan Stanley’s Adam Jonas reiterated $300, arguing that orbital computing and SpaceX’s AI opportunity remain undervalued.

Goldman Sachs is more restrained at $220, while CFRA set a remarkably bearish $115 target when coverage began, according to Benzinga.

The range underscores radically different assumptions for Starlink penetration, Starship launch frequency, AI-compute economics, and capital intensity. It also makes operating execution more important than the headline average.

Nasdaq buying helps SpaceX, but cannot carry thesis

The Nasdaq-100 rebalance improves SpaceX stock’s near-term technical setup. Its index weight has more than doubled, which compels passive funds to increase their positions just as additional shares become eligible for public trading.

That should deepen liquidity and embed SpaceX more firmly across QQQ, retirement accounts and other technology-focused portfolios. Investors buying Nasdaq-100 products now receive more than twice the SpaceX exposure they did following its July inclusion, potentially creating a broader and more durable shareholder base.

Still, this is a supporting catalyst, not a standalone Buy thesis.

Index funds are purchasing SpaceX because their mandates require it, not because the company suddenly produced stronger earnings, improved margins, or reduced execution risk. Once the rebalance is completed, that compulsory buyer largely disappears and attention returns to Starlink growth, Starship execution, launch economics, AI spending, and capital intensity.

Starship represents the next major operating test.

A successful flight could strengthen SpaceX’s ability to deploy heavier Starlink V3 satellites and support its long-term revenue narrative. Another delay or failure could quickly return execution risk to center stage.

Investors should now watch whether SpaceX holds its gains after passive buying ends.

That increased exposure also carries risks for retirement savers who own SpaceX indirectly through QQQ and similar funds. If SpaceX’s valuation compresses or execution falters, retirement accounts absorb that downside automatically. 

It’s important to note that investors in SpaceX stock are already paying a massive premium for future growth. 

The shares trade at 1,059 times forward non-GAAP earnings, compared with a sector median of just 12.9 times, representing a premium of more than 8,000% to the sector, according to Seeking Alpha data.
